Who we are

Biome Friends was created to conserve biodiversity in the tropics and other priority areas in Latin America, Africa, and South/Southeast Asia. This is where nature is most threatened and where dollars go furthest.

Our board of directors selects projects to support from among those managed by the International Conservation Fund of Canada (Registered Canadian Charity #85247 8189 RR0001), which now operates under the name Biome Conservation. The board also considers projects suggested by its donors, provided the project aligns with Biome Friends’ mission.

About Us

How we work

All Biome Friends projects involve partnering with capable locally based conservation organizations who carry out the work on the ground.  They know best what needs doing and how to go about it.  Biome Conservation has well-established relationships with local field partner organizations, including those of Indigenous people, and the Biome Friends board of directors brings its own experience in international conservation.

Our niche and priorities

Biome Friends looks for opportunities to support direct conservation action that results in lasting gains.  We prioritize the protection of intact landscape-scale ecosystems and smaller sites of high conservation significance.  With some projects, habitat restoration is undertaken to improve ecological connectivity, climate resilience and ecological sustainability.  There must be a good plan to reduce threats to biodiversity—one that is feasible and cost-effective.  We place high importance on involving and benefitting local communities.  Another consideration is the provision of ecosystem services—especially climate mitigation and adaptation.
